Polymarket CEO hints at an on-chain asset but announces no token

Polymarket founder and CEO Shayne Coplan used the opening fireside chat at TOKEN2049 Singapore on Wednesday, October 7, to hint that the prediction market is exploring an on-chain asset tied to its economy. He announced no token: there was no ticker, launch date, contract address or distribution plan.

  • Coplan described an on-chain asset linked to Polymarket’s economy, according to reports of the session.
  • No POLY launch, airdrop date or token design was announced on stage.
  • Polymarket has teased a token since October 2025 and filed POLY trademarks in February 2026.

Coplan shared the stage with Balaji Srinivasan for the conference’s opening session. According to a Crypto Times recap of Day 1, he talked about an asset tied to Polymarket’s activity but gave none of the details a launch would need. The most detailed account of his remarks, which describes an asset with programmatic utility, comes from a Chinese-language relay of the session rather than an official transcript, so the exact framing remains unconfirmed.

A tease that has been building for a year

Coplan first posted a cryptic “$POLY” on X in October 2025. Later that month, chief marketing officer Matthew Modabber said there would be a token and an airdrop, after the company’s US app launched, The Block reported. In February 2026, Polymarket’s parent company filed intent-to-use trademark applications for POLY and $POLY with the US Patent and Trademark Office.

In the days before TOKEN2049, Coplan replied to a post comparing Polymarket’s weekend revenue with Hyperliquid’s, saying he would have something to say at the conference, which revived speculation about a launch.

Coplan contrasted Polymarket with token speculation

In the same session Coplan drew a line between prediction markets and memecoin-style trading. “On Polymarket, if you’re trading these markets, there’s no exponential upside,” he said, as reported by Cointelegraph, describing the chase for 100x tokens as irrational exuberance.

Where Polymarket stands

Polymarket bought CFTC-licensed exchange QCEX in July 2025 and reopened to US users through an iOS app in May 2026. Intercontinental Exchange, the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, has invested $1.6 billion in the company across two rounds. Polymarket recorded about $1.21 billion of prediction volume over the past seven days, against roughly $2.3 billion at rival Kalshi, according to Cointelegraph. A US House inquiry into insider trading on Kalshi and Polymarket, opened in May, widened in late September.

The CCS read. A Polymarket token would be one of the most closely watched launches of the cycle, because it would test whether a regulated, ICE-backed US venue can also run a crypto-native token economy. That tension is probably why the company keeps hinting rather than shipping: anything that looks like equity-like value capture for US users invites securities questions, and the House inquiry adds scrutiny. Until there is a ticker, a contract and a distribution plan, this is a signal of intent, not a product.

Watch for an official post from Polymarket or Coplan with token details, and for any change in prediction-market odds on a 2026 launch. More from the event: BitMine’s 5% ETH hard cap and TOKEN2049’s first US edition in New York.
