Dr. Max Li on cloud computing and file storage at Computecoin
In this episode
Ashton Addison speaks with Dr. Max Li, CEO of Computecoin, on their Cloud computing solutions, merge mining with Filecoin, powering Web3 applications and the metaverse, their recent testnet launch, and the road to the mainnet in the summer of 2022.
- Computecoin addresses the infrastructure gap where Web3 and metaverse applications currently run on centralized Web2 cloud providers like AWS and Google Cloud.
- The platform aggregates computing resources from data centers, crypto mining operations, and decentralized storage networks across 25+ countries using a unified API.
- Merged mining technology allows Filecoin miners to simultaneously mine Computecoin tokens while continuing their existing mining operations without conflict.
- Computecoin's testnet, launched in November 2021, accumulated computing power exceeding Japan's Fugaku supercomputer within four months with over 200,000 community providers.
- The platform provides developer tools with familiar Web2-style APIs and SDKs to reduce the learning curve for deploying applications on decentralized infrastructure.

i am ashton addison from block west capital for investment pitch media in the Crypto Coin Show and today on blockchain interviews we have dr max lee the ceo of compute coin dr lee welcome to the show and thank you for taking the time thank you thank you for the invitation and it's my pleasure to be here and talking to you guys and i think so we can have you know a lot of fun
for people to understand and know come to coin definitely yeah there's lots to talk about and the infrastructure of the future of web 3 and the metaverse is something that is absolutely necessary for us to move into the next generation and the technological revolution and your team is putting a great part into that so i'm excited to dive into compute coin and i would love for you to
start off our conversation by just giving a high level overview of the solutions and the technology that your team is bringing into the space and then we'll dive into the details yeah that's great that's great so yeah basically completecoin is trying to be the infrastructure for battery and the manifest so you know that's basically everyone is talking
about the web3 and the metaverse right now right there's a tons of projects that are working on to build these cool applications in web stream but unfortunately you know after we did lots of interview on these projects early last year we figured out the big missing piece in the whole industry is all these web 3 applications they are still deployed on web 2 infrastructure
well i mean web 2 infrastructure is like aws or google cloud or ali cloud is a centralized cloud service provider right so by doing so this web three and my adverts applications they already see lots of performance limitations including raw blogs decentraland if you guys check out the news recently right there's a lot of concerns about the performance of their
platform basically and all these things these performance limitations goes down to the infrastructure problem it's all because they are still using web 2 infrastructure which doesn't make any sense you know the web 3 applications running on web 2 infrastructure of course you're going to suffer a lot from from these limitations and the key thing is the
cost and the latency right and the scalability so that's the motivation for us to build a new generation infrastructure we call it web3 infrastructure for web three and megaverse applications so great thank you great intro and you're completely right that most of the internet is hosted on you know these cloud servers right now and i've heard about decentralized cloud
computing i'm guessing that's you know not the only thing but that is an important step in moving you know web 3 applications into that same technology that's hosting it and you talked there about the cost and the latency and the issues that right now in hosting using this kind of infrastructure can you talk about compute coins technology and how you're solving those
problems yeah that's so basically you know once we identify this problem right so the solution is basically it's a food stack of technology so it's not you know sometimes i want to talk to my team and say oh we are not a blockchain project we are a tax firm so because in our solution where blockchain is only one technology
used in our solution so we have edge computing we have networking science we have ai we have emergency mining we have a bunch of very cutting edge technologies in a solution basically so the basic idea of a compute coin is this so we are a aggregator first of all just like expedia so expedia integrates all the hotels resource rental costs right and for people who
want to travel you go to expedia or bookings right to book your to check the availability to compare the price and then you book your hotel right you rather than you're going to putin's website or a shelton website to compare the availability of the price right so and this is the basic idea of a compute point so we are not building our own data centers like what
Amazon aws did 20 years ago you know they burn lots of investors money to build the data center from one place to another right they spent 10 years to build the whole stuff and bring a lot of money so we are like expedia we are in we are integrating all these goods computing rigs or machines right so and then you know of course this is a
decentralized way in a decentralized way and then to the top we provide very comprehensive developer tools and to light these developers life is easy what does it mean that means like the current big hurdles for the developers to deploy their web 3 applications on what these central infrastructure is there's a big learning curve for them they don't know how to know that don't
do that for example if you ask a developer to say hey i want to host my website right on aws or google cloud they can they can have it done in one hour or two right because because he got familiar with all the apis sdk all other stuff right it's pretty quick but you say okay now i want to host my website on file for example decentralized storage infrastructure
the engineers are gonna spend i don't know maybe months to learn from the scratch what are the blockchain whether the alcohol what is their tokenomics mechanism how can i deploy my stuff on filecoin it's a big learning curve right so what can people want to do is like we provide make them life their life as easy as possible we provide we call it you know in our
white paper we say we're gonna provide a unified api which is exactly the same i don't know exactly the same but the roughly the same api and sdk as the web to cloud service providers and then these these developers they just easily call our api and which they're quite familiar with right and then their their web three applications will be automatically using the underlying
decentralized cloud and the computing power okay that makes sense and you mentioned they're doing it in a decentralized way as decentralized applications are by nature but i'm curious in the way that it's decentralized having anybody be able to contribute whether it's their computing comp their computing power or their resources is that something that you know people
involved in blockchain can help contribute their resources into compute coin exactly exactly so now as i said we are an aggregator right which integrates all these computing powers so i mean storage powers more spins basically so we already be able to integrate the traditional data centers all these different dc's and also eth mining machines and
the major decentralized storage risks for example like falcon chia swarm vcc and the ar or wave so we and recently we just integrated a hnt helium basically to use their bandwidth right you know and basically we already integrate all these powerful hardwares so our providers they are idc center owners they are crypto
money from farm owners and we already have like more than 200k community and power providers and the storage power providers from more than 25 countries in the world and this is very encouraging we have we achieved this within four months we launched our test net early november last year so you know by the end of the march we already have this amount of
power in our network so it's a pure decentralized people contribute from these countries which i don't know their name right and the total computer power in our test net domain is already larger than the number one super computer in the world which is named fugaku located in japan for scientific computing we already surpassed their computing power so which is
amazing that is amazing and i was reading into the computing resources and with compute coin i saw something about merged mining technology can you talk about that merge and what that involves well that's the most one of the most beautiful parts in our technology the merged mining technology so what does that mean that means like if let's say if you're a crypto money machine
like the falcon for example right so what you need to do is like you just install our client the ccn client and then start mining ccn but in the meanwhile you're still keep mining file coin there's no conflict and you can do both that means what that means you can earn much more there's nothing first right nothing to lose and in the meanwhile
ccn gonna give you because we have lots of real data coming into us right we so we're gonna give this a real data to falcon mining machines for storage service and of course they're going to earn they're going to pay for that kind of storage the real data storage from our clients right just like people go to expedia and book a hotel from a hilton and hilton gonna get paid of course
expedia are gonna get get some commission fee by doing this by providing the service right so we are doing this similar similar thing the business model is quite similar so then the let's say then the fact of many money miners there are they enjoy this the more income from 16 right so that means they can earn falcon as they did before and in the meanwhile they earn 16
tokens and they may have lots of real data that comes from ccm platform for storage and they got paid so this is a yeah lots of this is a it's a very big extra income right for these miners so that's why you know starting from early november last year just a four months we have so many miners join us from 25 countries in our world because they you know they got
they got a lot of benefits from ccn90 that's incredible and you mentioned earlier there that you were launching the test net i'm curious if you know the test net for the merged miners and also for the applications that are being launched you know are you receiving real tokens and rewards while it's on the test net or is that at a later stage
yeah there will be a later stage where you have a test and tokens right now and yeah so and later on when we launch our mainnet in this summer this year so our tesla tokens will be converted to mainland tokens very cool and it i feel like this is a very you know there's a lot to it's complex in building it with your team how long has your team been working on
the compute coin network well it's a very good question basically we you know the story of the project is a fascinating because we actually i'm i'm a faculty member at the columbia university basically working with the electrical engineering department and at the very beginning you know this compute coin stuff is a research topic back to 2018
so you know a few researchers my colleagues you know we start working on this thing since since that from that time you know and then we over the past few years we have u.s patents granted from the us plan and office and we publish the you know academic papers on the world to better journals and then early last year people started to talk about webster
in the manners right in not back to 2018 there's no life through real matters so early last year everyone started to boom talking about the matters web3 is that the you know the world is everywhere right and then and then we did a lot of review and on the whole industry and we identified that big needs and piece and then we look back what do we have done so far in
in a research lab and we found out that oh all the papers all the solutions we have is the perfect fit to build the web three infrastructure for website random members so then early last year it's not that early the may last year 2021 we officially bring abroad this research results from the research lab to the industry as a product and then we
come up with we came up with the name compute coin compute coin so yeah that's the there's a story so basically we have been working this for almost four years wow very cool story dr lee and you mentioned there about the metaverse as well now we've seen decentralized applications being hosted on the ethereum network at least for many years now but the metaverse seems to
take it to the next level you know with a lot more intensity of the computing power needed and better ground and hopefully you know right now the metaverse the graphics aren't incredible but i have a feeling that in the very near future it's going to move to something that is incredible and that's going to require a lot of power you know how how focused is your team on
ensuring the metaverse is you know computing fluidly and it's being hosted in the in the proper way well then this is the weather set so the infrastructure if the infrastructure can provide low latency and low customer computing power so that all the adverse applications will come will come true otherwise they're gonna go nowhere yeah because you know the latency gonna give
you this local motion sickness right so people cannot buy like a very vr glass of four hours maybe five minutes 10 minutes it's okay right play some some game but what you know all your life goes there like a social networking like meeting working gaming and everything then you wear like a 10 hours vr glass per day yeah you can that you're dying right
so it's all because it's a locomotion sickness and that and then fundamentally it is because of latency issue right and also the cost you know everyone is complaining the aws and the you know google cloud when they pay the bill every month it's expensive right so and you know in the coming years before especially for these manifest applications one is wanna
like have a very immersive experience right you have lots you need lots of computing power for the real time 3d rendering and the pre-processing your sense sensor data on your environment lots of a few very intensive computing tasks in real time and then the cost right the computing power cost is critical so and if we can resolve these two problems
from the infrastructure level then we're done we are able to support all the kinds of network applications and cc is the basic basic idea on this is we leverage two key technologies one is edge computing which is already well known and utilized in 5g network and the second is the networking science for the load balancing and the traffic scheduling all
these type of things so by so the azure computing maybe i think you already have some background on that so it's like if let's say if i'm in the central park and manhattan right i'm wearing a vr glass and i want to play some games or social or whatever so the edge computing that we're gonna in compute coin we're gonna form first
to form a proximity network around you right so these computing powers just around you in manhattan jersey and long island city for example and they're gonna they're close to you right so they're gonna offer you low latency and also low cost because we have so many small servers around you there are many machines there are small idc's and private clouds
providers for example and then the cost is much much lower than compared with the aws and they offer you the low latency service as well so it's all thanks to this cutting edge technology so we can support some adverse applications in the near future i'm looking forward to see how that plays out especially after the main net launch that you mentioned near
the end of this year tentatively and i would love to you know get a better picture on you know what you and your team have as the main goals between now and that main network and what needs to get done yeah it's wonderful great great so dr lee what would you say are some of the main road map points that you and your team need to get in the next six months towards the main net
launch yeah basically our midnight launch will be in this summer now the end of now the end of the year yeah this summer we're gonna yeah so anime you know after the midnight launch we're gonna in the fall basically we plan to release our tokens on centralized exchange and before that we let me do the talk public sale token
sale probably and then our target is by the end of this year so we are targeting at least 50 to 100 very active matter versus three applications running on ccn which we feel very confident on that because so far even we just have our test net only we already have like the 10 plus applications running on our test net you know they already enjoy
enjoy the lot from our services basically and you know more importantly it's like this so why do you feel confident because the cost because i mentioned the cost in a low latency low cost right so the cost compared with the aws and google cloud we can reduce that cost by 30 to 50 percent so based on the pilot we have we're doing with some companies in the
states right now aei companies or you know so who needs lots of community powers for their avatar training whatever so and this is a big selling point you know and this is this is a lot savings right so with all these fighters experience from you know the pilots we feel confident that by the end of this year we're gonna have like maybe a few hundreds of
applications right now since the end so that's the goal after we launch our minute all our focus is to provide or further improve the performance of the our main data and also the developer tools make it more comprehensive more easier for developers to use and then you know developers will be come to us and start to build some cool stuff that's great i'm looking forward to that
and for the viewers that are looking to follow along for that main net launch and also to get involved with the merged mining and helping in any way without coin what is the best way for them to learn more yes so basically we have our website yeah there's a lot of information there and also we have our own website we have our own wiki page
so in the reiki page we have different sections for one session for minors one section for developers by section four token holders so no matter what role you're playing right now you can even join us in some way so we have a lot of detailed documents there and you can follow and get to know us awesome sounds great dr lee thank you so much i will leave the compute coin links
as well in the description box below for the viewers all the best with everything moving forward towards the main net launch of compute coin and let's follow up in the near future thank you yeah for sure you
