Diego Di Tommaso on OVER's AR metaverse technology and web3 collaboration
In this episode
Ashton Addison speaks with Diego Di Tommaso, Co-Founder and COO of OVER, on their AR Metaverse technology, updates from our last conversation, the future fashion trends in AR, the upcoming AR hardware needed to accelerate adoption of AR metaverse, their plan for open web3 collaboration and cross-metaverse integration, and more.
- OVER tokenizes physical geographic coordinates as NFTs called OVR Lands, allowing users to publish AR content at specific real-world locations with 850,000 lands sold across 29,500 owners.
- The platform uses crowdsourced 3D mapping technology to achieve 20-centimeter indoor precision versus GPS's 4-6 meter outdoor accuracy, enabling precise avatar placement and location-based AR experiences.
- Current use cases include AR art browsing, avatar-based social meetings, location-based games like treasure hunts with 1.6 million locations visited, and emerging wearable NFT fashion integration.
- OVER operates on three infrastructure layers: ownership layer for OVR Lands, mapping layer for geolocation precision, and builder layer with web and Unity-based tools for creating 19,000 uploaded experiences.
- Digital fashion in AR metaverse is expected to become a significant market as users spend more time in spatial environments, with wearable NFTs allowing users to display clothing on avatars.

i'm ashton addison from block west capital for investmentpitch media and today on the Crypto Coin Show we have back with us diego d tommaso co-founder and ceo of over the reality diego welcome back to the show and i'm excited to dive into metaverse spatial web ar more specifically which i think is a great twist on the metaverse that not a lot of people are thinking about you
know they're thinking about full vr realities and the truth is we can still live in the real world while sort of inputting the parts of the metaverse that we like to enhance functionality quality of life let's just dive into our conversation for those who didn't see our first interview in around april a few months back i would love to you know get an overview
of just for the first time viewers what is overreality specifically working on and then we'll dive into all the updates and everything in ar metaverse absolutely so thank you very much it's a big pleasure to be here again so yeah i mean you already touched some very interesting points also about why we're building a materiality instead of
building virtual reality but that's by in a little bit on what we're doing so our vision is to build an augmented reality metaverse and what we mean by that we mean mixing what is the physical and the virtual world augmenting the physical world with the ar content that is localized that is actually contextualized to specific locations so the way we do it is by tokenizing
digital space so physical space actually so just to give a comparison in the web you buy a web domain and you publish on the web page in our case you buy a special domain so you buy geographic coordinates for example you buy the coordinates of the colosseum and since you own this special domain basically you can publish content on that location and this content you will
be able to see it right now through mobile phones and in the near future you will be able to experience that with smart glasses so as soon as we have a smart glasses the buy that is i mean has enough penetration in the market we will also be on that device we are basically hardware agnostic so those special domains we call those ovr lands and those are nfps
Before they were on ethereum now we are on the polygon blockchain because of the gases of course and yeah of those of those lengths we up to now how we sold 850 000 and 29 500 owners so this make us one of i would say the biggest community of vehicle land owners of course the reason why that is also because the price is very accessible if
compared to other metabolism but still is very nice to have a big community of long-term visionaries on their technology and so this is the base the base block of our of our metaverse but our metaverse is made up in terms of infrastructure of three main layers so this is the first one is the ownership layer over that we have a mapping layer that i will tell you about
and the final is a builder so a software that you can use to publish the content so coming coming to the middle layer that actually for us is the most important this is a mapping layer so when you do geolocalize or make reality like us you have a problem with precision so usually when you do this kind of activity you use gps but gps works quite fine outdoor but indoor where
unfortunately we spend most of our life the gps doesn't work at all so we built a system that from taking pictures of a location generate a 3d map of location and then you can locate yourself in space very precisely 20 centimeters versus four to six meters outdoor for the gps so this allows for all of these use cases that are theoretically possible but you don't see
it right now so you want to have an avatar in front of the door you want to augment the shop window you want to actually reconstruct the building like it was thousands of years ago very precisely you need precision when you do this kind of stuff and this technology allows for that so this is about the mapping and this is a crowd-source activity that are taken
over by our community because it's a huge effort of course to map locations and finally we have this turtle here is a builder that allows you to publish content we have two kind of builders one is a web builder so for no coders you just drag and drop nfps that you own or 3d assets that you own that are not even nfts you can publish those in space
or if you can code we also give you a more powerful tool that is a unity plugin so basically if you can code in unity you can also build complex stuff so like logics even games inside of this platform up to date we have 19 000 experiences that have been uploaded in the spiritual layer over the physical world incredible great to hear and it sounds
like the metaverse is progressing nicely you know with you know 80 000 different plots and on tens of thousands of people already involved but when you compared it to you know websites and buying a domain name you know it's like we're back in 1993 you know only 80 000 domain names have sold now there are billions and billions and like i feel like we're
really just still at the very beginning of spatial domains and you touched on a lot of points there i want to get into the ar technology and how we can experience this after but i want to first talk about you know the experiences you mentioned being able to code experiences what are the sort of the main functions of the experience in
in these spatial domains and in the metaverse field is it just for entertainment are people actually running businesses and creating value or you know generating revenue for their businesses through it you know what kind of functionality could these spatial domain owners use in the metaverse yeah so this is a this is a very good question because also when we built
the platform we was imagining certain kinds of use cases and then the market and the usage is always a little bit different so we have three main use cases of our platform right now so one use case is actually browsing this augmented reality content that can range from art i mean artists were the first to actually use this kind of technology two actually
people that are creating for example virtual locations where they can meet because i didn't mention it that we have avatars so when you are in this materials you are there with your own avatar that is photorealistic and so people also use this platform in order to meet in this video so you have daily presence to have an avatar in your room of your
friend that maybe is a thousand years a thousand thousand miles away so this is another use case so beautiful meetings people not only experiences experiencing this ar content but also meeting together with this air content and finally another use case that also we didn't envision so strong that is working a lot is a game like a treasure hunt so we have a pokemon ghost
type treasure and so people is really also engaged by this because they say they went to 1.6 million locations in the since the beginning of the launch of the platform to play to this game and also also for example this one is a very good entry point to ar because sometimes when i speak up we speak about what i'm doing when i speak about the ar people get a
little bit confused is it vr it is ar but when i tell them do you remember that game pokemon go they immediately remember so it's a low friction to engage on board people in the metaverse so that is i mean the three main use case that we have right now and we are gonna we believe we are gonna see other two that are gonna emerge very strongly in the next future so one is
wearables nft is wearable so built for clothing we just updated the app now you will be able to actually create and where and if these so flex your nfps over your avatar and another big use case that we see coming are live events so as i was mentioning we have these avatars and of course you can participate with these avatars to events where for example the performer
is not only there in a 2d screen but is there with his own avatar and through also make motion tracking shirts basically you cannot only see the face but you can see all of this body language very interesting i wanted to touch on that on the fashion because i know you know in your in your past experiences you worked in the fashion industry i've seen that as a
major use case you know with some big brands like nike and adidas making big partnerships and sort of dropping ar and metaverse fashion and to some it seems like a very far away like just something that they don't see value in it because they're not really living or spending a lot of time in the metaverse right now how important how large do you think that
market is actually going to become to have digital fashion i think that it is going to be huge just because the more we spend time in the metaverse and when we say matters we can also expand this term now so if we expand the idea of metaphors and we want to include also webtoon meta verses or things like 2d like twitter and so on we already see
this happening we see people that use nfts like their efts so like their their profile image and that is very powerful signaling that you are part of a community and basically becomes part of your identity so this is already true for what is 2d but think about that when your presence in this metaverse in this 3d metaverse will be a 3d metaverse
where you're not only there with text and with some 2d pictures but you will be also you also will have a virtual physicity over there you will have a body you will have an avatar force where you basically interact with people so you will want to actually express yourself in the same way you express yourself in the real world because if you think about that fashion
and clothing and so on it's not only about business is also about or just following a friend it's also about telling who you are for example there are some objects that represent the facts that you are powerful or rich in the physical world like for example you own a rolex or for example you have some kind of clothes your street streetwear clothes and so that is
signaling that you actually part of that community or actually like to represent yourself like that so in the physical world we have a lot of more limitations in terms of expression for this kind of tools to express yourself because you need to buy the asset physically move around go maybe around with a bag and the enter event and bring with you stuff
in this case in the in the digital world it will be much much more easier to actually express yourself and you will have much more less limitations also so this i mean need to express yourself and to signal you are part of the community it's something that is i mean basically part of humanity and so we'll be also in the digital world and these nfts basically are
allowing for that and removing friction on that so yes i really believe that it's going to be huge a huge use case thank you for the insight diego and i feel like people are really going to realize the value of it once they're more immersed in the metaverse in ar and not just in the 2d you know we're already seeing it in the profile pictures you know on twitter and just on
the web we're not really immersed in it or actually seeing the avatars walk around as often i feel like once that shift happens then the next large waves of adoption for that kind of technology will will come to fruition but i feel like one of the setbacks right now is the technology to immerse into it you know we can use our phones and people have
been using ar on their phone since pokemon go and even before that but to be fully immersed in it with the ar technology and glasses that give you sort of that vr experience where you can look all around and see that you're in the metaverse while still seeing that you're in real life as well i'm guessing you're following that technology and obviously it's going to bring a whole
lot more immersion to over the reality once you have ar technology that allows you to be more immersed but it's been in the works for such a long time now it's continually getting better i saw that google is just working on another version of ar glasses where is that at and are you following that technology to help with over no absolutely so for us of course
the effect of having another device that is basically smart glasses where you can actually project this era content while you're still looking at the real world so right now everybody's staring at the phone like for six the average is 6.5 hours per day so is huge amount of time if you think about that one i don't know five years ago or ten years ago you
would never say that we were reduced like ourselves like that and so i think that the fact that we need to connect with this world of information is very clear is already there and the smart glass device will be actually a game changer not only for us not only for our company but i mean for all humanity actually and why that because basically you could have again
your heads up so you're not anyway staring at the phone you can see the real world and actually have all of this information directly projected in your retina but still be aware of the physical world so yes you will just augment physical world not only not go away from the physical world in a virtual world but just go in a really a way of reality at
the end of the day we are physical beings so also i mean this idea of really going away from reality so for example what you do with vr will be there and will be strong it will grow but let's remember that we are physical beings so a device that allow for that will be a game changer and will happen it's just about time and the time probably is one year
two years we already been of course experimenting a lot with these devices we've been working for example with magic lip that has amazing results the problem with magic nip of course the price tag is very high and the device is quite bulky so it's not going to work for the broader public what we believe is actually that the way this technology will go is that we will
have a glass that is just a visualization device while all the computation will be on our mobile phones and so there will be these devices that are connected to other mobile phones for the computation but i mean we really see this as a technological trajectory that's like inevitable if you think about that we started from oral history then we get into books we went
to mainframes with terminals then laptops decks of lives of them everybody's looking at the phone so really information is getting every day closer and closer to us and i mean the end game is of course with the smart glasses and maybe in the future it directly in our brains will for example what eleanor's mask is building with the navalic so we really see this
happening and this happening quite quite close in the future so this will be a new way we will interact information so we imagine that in five years will be very strange to see somebody staring at this phone so just like seeing somebody now typing with the t9 to send a message on a nokia phone and i mean it looks looks like we are talking about something that happened
very long ago but 10 years ago nokia was still there maybe not 10 12 but they were still there so it's incredible we i think we humans kind of underestimate how fast the technology is growing definitely yeah i'm i'm looking forward to seeing that transition and hopefully there remains competition in the ar hardware and technology you know google
and magically for making strides but i'm hoping other companies come up with great solutions and i like what you mentioned there about sort of connecting the ar technology to your phone as well so you're not wearing a whole computer on your face perhaps there's some kind of hybrid technology that allows the computation to happen on the device beside you and you can
have more of a lightweight glasses i feel like that's a huge barrier right now with the vr they're so thick on the front of your face that i can't imagine somebody going to work for eight hours in vr because it's just not comfortable enough at this point so looking forward to seeing that transition absolutely looking forward with over you mentioned some great use
cases of the next kind of industries that you'll be looking at entering into the ar metaverse how does over grow as these and other use cases come in to spatial web how are you developing the technology growing out the company to sort of fit the industry needs yeah so i will i will divide this in two main areas so
the first i mean the technological endorsement that we really striving to is this mapping thing so as i was mentioning you we have this technology to locate assets in space and we see really this as the entry to the augmented reality matters without this precision you cannot really build an augmented reality materials you can build games like
pokemon go fine but you cannot build all of the other amazing use cases that anybody can imagine and anybody actually think about when you talk about augmented reality so this is the core idea and also for us this is a kind of a mission because this problem of solving how to localize objects in space is a problem that already big companies are working on for example google
microsoft niantic they're all working on the direction if you are in new york and you try to use for example your phone to locate you in space you will see that we will ask you to point to the buildings because the gps doesn't work there so they are also working in the direction but we want to build the web3 version of this data layer because without that i mean we still
have the same gatekeepers that we control the access to this kind of experiences so this is really the base where we're building on so over this base we see the potential the big use cases we are working on are some of them of those already talking about so the wearables the live events so we are now in september we're gonna go out with a
console so that not only us can create these live events with avatars that perform in front of people but we will have an open source console so everybody will be able to create his own event with this motion tracking suit at the beginning and by the end of the year we will also as a motion tracking from the phone so everybody will be able to bring
the full body language inside the metaverse and a third thing we are already working on and we really believe that is another important infrastructural side is the interoperability so the fact that basically when you have an object in the metaverse in one metaverse you need to be able to use it also in other metaverses because if we don't create the materials in this way we are going
to follow back to the web2 metaverse where we live in closed gardens and basically we just had some blockchain cool stuff over there but nothing will really change i believe that we have this opportunity to build this better system where people can actually create content in one metaverse and then this content can be used anywhere else and in this way actually
There is no not anymore a zero-sum game is a game where basically you create something for you and your metaverse but basically the wall ecosystem will get an advantage out of that and so this is another technical challenge because of course you need to adapt to other standards and so on but it's something that you're really working on already one first a sample
that we released i think three months ago it's an integration with the sandbox assets so if you are owner right now for example of nfp from sandbox not only you can see it on ovr that is kind of easy just display stuff in ar but you can actually play with it so the same actions the same movements you can do inside sandbox with your avatar you can
do it in augmented reality in over and this is something that we need to spend so not only sandbox but many many other projects and meta verses so hopefully everybody is going in this direction but actually is also what we're seeing there so we've been we are really active in the ecosystem we are at all conferences and so on and it's very nice to see that this idea
of having a metaverse that is really interoperable is shared by all of the bigger sectors in this space so yeah i will say that this is the big things we are really thinking about amazing diego and i applaud you for not just building cool technology but the way in which you're building it to ensure decentralization collaboration and interoperability and not having the
wild gardens of web 2 as you mentioned because i think it's so much more important to ensure that the future of the internet is somewhere where people can collaborate and people can build their own spatial web parts and incorporate and sort of take technology and do with it what they like so i'm really looking forward to seeing how over continues to grow in
that direction now we don't have a lot of time left but you did mention some great use cases that are already in place for over right now and also the technology for people to build their own spatial webs for people that want to check out you know the treasure hunt game or the experiences that are already available on over what is the best way for people
to experience that and for the builders what's the best way for them to get started well yes of course the first way to access to this is just downloading the app so this is what i say to everybody that also maybe want to invest or something say please first of all download the app check out what we're building so you just download the app you can see the
experiences you can play to these games so maybe start earning some nfts or tokens for other projects that we are collaborating with and once you do that of course there's a world war to explore so you can go in our website and if you are a builder we have all the documentation there you can use to actually create you can play with the web builder and if you really
into it you can also participate to some of our competitions monthly we create what we call airwards so it's a competition where we incentivize the best creators to create contents compelling content on over so that is i think the best way to try to start interacting with our platform sounds great i will leave those links in the description box below as well to
make it easy for the viewers all the best with everything moving forward and over and let's do our next interview in the ar metaverse how about that diego absolutely would love we'd love to do that let's do that let's do that looking forward to it so let's definitely follow up in the near future thank you very much bye thank you
